42nd BRIGHTON (Saltdean)
Scout Group, East Sussex, UK
Quiz Model Answers
The model answers are:
1. What was BP's full name?
Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell.
2. What is the part of the flag nearest the staff called?
The Hoist.
3. How many pieces of leather are there in a Plaited Woggle?
One piece of leather with two longitidinal cuts.
4. What is a Twist?
A dough mixture of flour, water and salt, pulled into a
long sausage, and spiral wrapped around a green stick.
It is then cooked gently over the embers of a fire until
golden brown (?). The stick is removed and the resultant
hollow tube filled with jam before devouring.
5. What is the eleventh Scout Law?
A Scout is not a fool. (attributed to BP)
Over many replies to this question I have become aware that
US scouts have twelve laws, and the eleventh in fact relates to
cleanliness - which I included in the quiz as a tongue-in-cheek
option! In fact the question is intended to have an
historical twist, because BP invented the original ten laws,
(which have since been reduced to seven in the UK).
6. How do you find North using an analogue watch in the Northern
Hemisphere?
Point the hour hand at the sun. South lies halfway between
the hour hand and (as the Explorer book describes it) the
noon point, using the smallest angle. The noon point on the
watch is twelve o'clock in winter and one o'clock in summer.
Note: This works between 06.00 and 18.00 hrs. Outside of these
times you need to bisect the largest angle to find South.
An elegant solution provided by Dr. David Martin
is: South lies halfway between the
hour hand and the noon point, going clockwise from the hour hand
before noon, and anticlockwise afterwards.
7. There is an obscure hint to the colour of our Group scarf
somewhere in our pages. What is the colour of our scarf?
It is a burgandy red colour, known as Dark Red. You can find
the colour in our 42nd logo, at the top of most pages.
8. Where was BP born?
In a house in a street off the north side of Hyde Park,
London, UK. (6 Stanhope Street which is now 11 Stanhope
Terrace.) BP was born on the 22nd February 1857, and died
on the 8th January 1941.
9. How long should it take to hike four kilometers?
Approximately 1 hour. Scouts tend to hike at around 4km per
hour, or approximately 3 miles per hour.
On a good day!
10.Which knot does a Thief Knot resemble?
The Reef Knot.
11.What do you use a Frapping Mallet for?
To hammer a frapping board and tighten the circular lashings
that complete a lashing.
12.When sleeping in blankets, should you have as many layers of
blanket under you as there are on top of you, or more under you,
or less under?
More under. The ground is generally colder than the air, and the
cold is transmitted by conduction rather that convection.
13.When do you use a diagonal lashing?
When you need to pull together two poles that are apart -
i.e. there is a gap between them. In all other cases
use a square lashing.
14.a) Union Flag b) Union Jack. Which is the correct term?
Both! a) The Flag should be known as the Union Flag unless
b) it is being flown from the jack staff of a ship.
